Lanzarote is a very
unique island, that’s why its wines are unique too. These wines benefit of
their own origin denomination: DO Vinos of Lanzarote. This
denomination was determined in 1993 and it safeguard different wines of the
Island.
A centenarian tradition
The wine of Lanzarote
started to be produced later than the wines from the others Islands. The first documents date back to 1737.
According to the first information the first wine produced became
aguardiente. During the years, with more experiences, the wines raised a higher
quality.
Curiously, the first “Bodega” small shop was in Lanzarote. The documents show It
has been working since 1775, even if its start was probably before.
Lanzarote has a
different climate for the viticulture
It has more or less
the same weather all the year. Its moderate temperatures contrast the more
variable ones of the wine areas of the Peninsula. Furthermore, the low presence
of rainfall makes the Island special for the viniculture.
Thanks to all these
characteristics, the grape harvest of Lanzarote is the first one in Europe. It starts during July,
way before then the other regions.
It is a completely
different way of cultivation
Another special feature of this cultivation is the shape, very different
from the one from the Peninsula.
In Lanzarote the plantation consists on digging 3 metres- diameter holes,
with a dept between 2 an 2,5 metres and growing the wine inside.
Usually there is a circular stone structure around the holes in order to
protect the plant. This kind of landscape can be seen walking around La Geria,
a unique and wonderful sight.
This kind of plantation can be only manual and handmade, and furthermore it
dosen’t allow an high density plantation, that’s why the production of the wine here is lower then in the Peninsula. In
some areas the ditches replaces the holes.
A wine with a
special taste
Thanks to the vulcanic soil and the mild teperatures the wine of Lanzarote has a special flavour. It
has a quite high sourness that contrasts with the special vulcanic mineral
taste. This wine is worth to be tryied.
A quality wine
All the years has been shown great quality results since 1994. During the
most tasting sessions it has been considered as good wine, sometimes excellent.
4 big different
