The old town of Gáldar

On one side there is the ancient hall of Gáldar, also known as the old hall houses. They have been built on an ancient building of XVIII century.

In its patio there is one of the most ancient dragon tree of Gran Canaria, that has been planted in 1718.

On the other hand, Gáldar count with the church  Matriz de Santiago de los Caballeros. It’s one of the most beautiful churches of the archipelago.

A part of its beauty, the mix between the baroque and neoclassical elements, is very curious. Inside there is an authentic masterpiece like the famous pila verde. In which Canary people defeated during the conquest of the island were baptized in.

The old town count also with Plaza Grande. This spectacular mall of the XIX century  has several  laurels of indias and acacias, for the enjoyment of the walker.

If you like to buy at the local markets, you are lucky because Gáldar still conserves its Municipal Market or the Recova Market. There are 11 stands open every day, except of Sundays and holidays, to offer to the buyer all kind of good food.

It’s impossible to leave Gáldar without visiting the town hall Teather or Municipal Theater. The actual building is of  1912, even if it has been deeply reformed in  2010.

Museum and Archaeological Park Cueva Pintada

A part of the old town, visiting Gáldar offers the pro to discover its Museum and Archaeological Park  Cueva Pintada.

Considered by many as the  Sistine Chapel of the ancient aboriginal canaries,  Cueva Pintada is one of the most important archaeological sites of all Canary Islands.  

Thanks to a great display of audiovisual media, the visit allows you to know more details about the pre-Hispanic world.

Necropolis of the Guancha

Just outside Gáldar we find the Necropolis of the Guancha. This archaeological zone conserves the remais of a village in the surface, where the ancient inhabitants of Gran Canaria use to live.  

It belongs to the Archaological Zone of the coast of Gáldar and it is an obliged stop for the passionates of prehispanic cultures.
