Las
Palmas count of a good weather all the year. For this reason is not strange to
see people inside the water in each season.
This
is one of the pros that invite the tourist to visit Playa de las Canteras, the
most famous urban beach of Gran Canaria, of the archipelago, of Spain and of
part of Europe.
The
waters of Playa de las Canteras are especially calm. This is for La Barra,
a barrier of sandstone and calcareous rock parallel to the sand, which makes
the role of breakwater and allows it to be a bathing area without jolts.
This
barrier was exploited long ago as a quarry to extract its mineral, used as raw
material for local constructions. That's why the name La Playa de las Canteras.
This beach has blue flag since years, as symbol of the quality of its services.
This
beach has an enviable location, just close the center. This allow to offer
several services to the visitors.
Close
to the beach there are a lot of hotels, there are lifeguards, police, a
playzone for children, access for people with reduced mobility, different wifi
spots and other services.
It’s
the ideal place to sunbathing, to walk, to enjoy snorkelling or the water
sports. If you love animals, there you will find a big variety of fauna.
There
are also several restaurants, pubs and shops that complete the offer of this
animated beach.
The
3.100 metres of Playa de las Canteras are divided in 3 zones.
On
one side, there is the arco norte or Playa Grande, with an extension of
more than 1.100 metres. It’s protected by La Barra and by the mountains of peninsula of the Isleta. By its end there is
the zone called La Puntilla, where sand accumulates in a natural way.
At
the middle of this beach there is the arco central, known also as Playa Chica, with an extension of about
160 metros.
The
arco sur or Playa de la Cícer o de Guanarteme, has a longitude
of about 1.080 metres. This part of the beach is curious because it always changes due
to the fact that it’s not protected by La Barra. Local people say that if you
visit the beach for 7 days, you won’t never see the same beach.
Even
if César
Manrique
is especially known in Lanzarote, he left his footprint also in other places of
the archipelago.
It’s
the case of the wind toys, located by Playa de las Canteras. This sculpture is made with iron and it was placed in the zone of La
Puntilla in the year 1991.
At the end of
Playa de las Canteras there is the Auditorium
Alfredo Kraus. To 80 metres from this emblematic building, the tenor of
Gran Canaria, count of his own bronze sculpture.
