Perfect location
Canary Islands, thanks to their geographic position, have the perfect conditions to have a wide marine fauna. One of the reasons of the marine fauna prosperity, is the confluence of cold and warm waters, with a lot of species that have got used to both type of waters.
Three important factors for which Lanzarote has so many cetacean all the year long:
- Its waters temperature never change a lot during the seasons, it is always between 18 and 20 degrees.
- They are calm waters with just a few currents and this helps the colonies stay.
- The water depth which is more or less between 500 and 1500 meters.
Thanks to these special conditions, waters closed to Lanzarote are full of fish, organic material and cephalopods. This huge amount of food and the characteristics of the region helps to keep the number of cetaceans so stable.
Which species can we meet closed to Lanzarote?
Next to the coast, 30 different species of cetacean were spotted. It is a very high number, since there are 87 species in the world. As in the Canary Islands there are more then one third of the species, they became an excellent environment to be studied.
There are many species we could contemplate during the cetacean watching. Among the most common there are the Bottlenose dolphin( Tursiops Trucatus), the Cachalot (Physeter Macrocephalus) and the Tropical dolphin (Globicephala macrorhynchus).
Among dolphins it is often possible to see common dolphins (Delphinus Delphis), striped dolphins (Stenella Corevalba), rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis), beaked whales, gray dolphins (Grampus Grislus) and spotted dolphins (Stenella Frantalis). In Lanzarote it is possible to see as well the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), the orca (Orcinus orca) and the false orca (Pseudorca Crassidens), among many other types of cetacean.
