Although at first glance it may seem to be an almost deserted island, the truth is that there are very special places waiting for you, such as the Cactus Garden in Lanzarote. Today in Canarian Transfer we will tell you more about this magical place that, without a doubt, is worth a visit.
What is the Jardín de Cactus in Lanzarote
As its name indicates, it is a cactarium or cactus garden. It is located in the village of Guatiza, that belongs to the municipality of Teguise.
Its location is special, also because it is located in an old arid quarry, better known as the rofera. Forty years ago nobody in Lanzarote thought, that this place would host one of the most visited points on the island nowadays.
The last big work of César Manrique
The idea to build this great cactarium was born in the 1960s. Since that moment Manrique made arrangements with the Cabildo of Lanzarote so that they could purchase the land where the Cactus Garden would be located and prepare it for the following work.
However, for several different reasons, the construction of this space couldn’t start until the 1980s.
Finally, the inauguration of this project by César Manrique took place in the year 1990.
What awaits us in the Cactus Garden of Lanzarote
Just few visitors expect what will find by the 5,000 square meters of this special botanical garden.
There there are around 4,500 cactus of approximately 450 different species, from all the corners of the planet.
Year after year the number of plants increases, adding species to the 13 families of cactus present by the garden.
The special disposal of the plants on terraces invites to stroll through this kind of amphitheatre. During the visit, there are several lagoons with coloured fish and water lilies that generate a contrast with the green and yellow tones of the cactus and the volcanic environment.
The old corn mill, or millo for the locals, also stands out in the horizon. It has been built at the beginning of the 11th century and then restored on request of Manrique. He wanted to perfectly integrate it into the environment.
There are also several monoliths of volcanic ash that decorate the pleasant walk between the cactus.
